Weight loss medications such as Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy are becoming increasingly popular, yet many people stop taking them too soon, often within just a few weeks. A recent study* found that over 30 per cent of people discontinue their GLP-1 medication within the first month, long before the treatment has had time to work. Why are so many people stopping early and how can our members stay on track?

Why people stop taking weight loss medication

GLP-1 medications can cause early side effects such as nausea, bloating and fatigue. These are usually temporary, but without clear guidance someone could easily assume something is wrong and decide to stop.

Dr Scott Isaacs, president elect of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology, explains that members start on a low dose which is gradually increased over several months. It can take five to six months to reach the full dose needed for meaningful weight loss. Stopping early means the body does not have time to adjust and the benefits are never fully realised.

Support is often the difference between stopping and succeeding.

At CheqUp, we guide members through every stage. This approach means we can answer questions, adjust treatment plans and help to manage side effects in ways that fit real life and provide support and help with expectations along the journey.

Why stopping early can set you back

GLP-1 medications influence both fat and muscle. Ending treatment too early can make it harder for the body to maintain muscle mass, which may slow metabolism and lead to a higher body fat percentage over time.

Weight cycling, where weight is lost and regained repeatedly, can become a risk. This pattern can be physically and emotionally draining and may affect long-term health.

These medications are not quick fixes. They are part of a longer-term approach to treating obesity as a chronic condition.

Making treatment work

For anyone taking GLP-1 medication, or thinking about starting, the right support can make a significant difference. Simple strategies, such as eating more slowly or avoiding high-fat meals, can reduce side effects. Having someone to speak to when motivation dips or appetite changes can help build confidence and maintain progress.

CheqUp Health Coaches provide practical, personalised guidance that combines nutrition, movement and mindset. They are here for the whole journey, helping members manage side effects, build habits and stay motivated. With consistent care and expert advice, GLP-1 medications become part of a sustainable, long-term approach to weight management.
