Alli capsule packet

What is Alli?

Alli is an over the counter medicine containing the active ingredient, Orlistat. It is taken orally in the form of a capsule.

Alli works in your digestive system by blocking about 25% of the fat you eat from being absorbed. Instead, this fat is passed out of the body naturally. Because it targets fat absorption and not appetite, there are no effects on hunger or fullness.

Ongoing guidance for dose changes and managing side effects

Alli is taken by mouth as a 60 mg capsule, up to three times a day.

You can start on the full dose right away, but it may be better to give your body time to adjust. A gentler way to ease in would be:

  • Start with one capsule a day, taken with your main meal (usually lunch or dinner). This gives you a chance to see how your body responds.
  • After a few days, if you feel comfortable, you can increase to two capsules a day. One capsule taken with two of your meals.
  • When you’re ready, move to the full dose: one capsule with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If you miss a meal or have a fat-free meal, just skip the dose. For best results, Alli should be taken alongside a lower-fat, calorie-reduced diet. Because it can affect how your body absorbs certain vitamins, it’s a good idea to take a daily multivitamin in the evening.
