If you’re taking a GLP-1 weight loss medication like Wegovy or Mounjaro, you’ve made a positive, proactive choice for your health. These medications are designed to help you reduce your appetite and stay in a calorie deficit – but how you respond to that appetite change matters more than many people realise. One of the most common setbacks we see? Undereating.
It might sound strange when you’re trying to lose weight, but not eating enough – especially on a GLP-1 medication – can actually slow your progress.
Kirsten, one of our expert Health Coaches has some answers in this short video.
Why undereating can slow you down
If your calorie deficit is too large while taking Mounjaro or Wegovy, your body doesn’t just burn fat, it starts to adapt in ways that help protect itself. This means:
- Your metabolism slows down, making it harder to lose weight.
- Your body clings to fat stores, thinking it needs to conserve energy.
- Your energy dips, leaving you feeling foggy, flat and fatigued.
- You start craving sugar and carbs, even if you’re trying to stay on track.
Sound familiar?
It’s not a failure. It’s biology.
And here’s something important to remember:
If you’re not feeling very hungry, that’s not your fault – it’s a sign your medication is working. GLP-1 medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro suppress appetite by slowing digestion and altering hunger signals. But your body still needs fuel to function well, even if you don’t feel like eating much.
In fact, not experiencing side effects can be a good sign. It means your body is adjusting well, setting you up for greater success when you move on to higher, therapeutic doses—starting at 5mg. This is where most people begin to see more noticeable weight loss results.
Nourishment is your ally – not the enemy
Weight loss doesn’t have to mean skipping meals or pushing through fatigue. In fact, long-term success comes from giving your body what it needs – not depriving it.
Your body still needs:
- Enough calories to keep your system running.
- Protein to support muscle and a healthy metabolism.
- Healthy fats and fibre to support digestion, hormones and long-term wellbeing.
When you’re working with a reduced appetite on Mounjaro or Wegovy, the goal isn’t to eat as little as possible – it’s to eat smart and nourish well within your appetite.
What to focus on now
Here’s how to stay on track, gently and sustainably:
- Prioritise protein: Build meals around a source like chicken, eggs, tofu, or lentils. This supports your metabolism and keeps you fuller for longer.
- Eat regularly – even if portions are small: This helps prevent dips in energy and keeps your body out of “survival mode.”
- Watch for signs of underfueling: Feeling tired, irritable, or craving sugar? These could be your body’s way of saying, “I need more fuel.”
- Use your support system: If you’re unsure how much to eat, or what to prioritise, your CheqUp Health Coach can help build a plan that suits your dose, goals and lifestyle.
This isn’t about forcing food or eating for the sake of it.
It’s about supporting your body so it can do the work you’re asking it to do. Undereating can undo all your hard work.
You’ve already taken the brave first step by starting weight loss medication. Now it’s about learning how to fuel that journey – so you feel better, stronger and more in control every day.
You’re not just losing weight.
You’re building a future that feels good to live in.
