Navigating a weight loss journey, especially when you’re incorporating medication, can sometimes feel like you’re charting your own unique map. You know where you want to go, but the terrain can present unexpected twists and turns! It’s in these moments that hearing from fellow travellers – learning from their experiences, their ‘aha!’ moments, and even their wobbles – can be incredibly reassuring and light the way.

At CheqUp, we believe in the power of shared wisdom. While medications like Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Rybelsus are fantastic aids, the journey is also rich with personal discoveries. Today, we’re sharing a few anonymised stories from our community, guided by our Lead Health Coach, Nina. These aren’t just anecdotes; they’re packed with practical lessons that could spark new insights for your own path.

The Protein Power-Up: Fine-Tuning Your Fuel

Making positive lifestyle changes is a huge step, and one of our members Nureen was doing just that, even before starting her medication. When Health Coach Nina explored her typical eating habits, Nureen shared she ate two meals a day, fasting until noon. Her first meal was a hefty protein hit: two eggs, four sausages, and vegetables, which she estimated at 80 to 100 grams of protein.

While protein is absolutely vital for feeling full and maintaining muscle during weight loss, this brought up a common question: can you have too much of a good thing in one go?

Healthy lunch recommended by Health Coaches

  • The Insight: Nina gently clarified that our bodies are marvels of efficiency, but they have their limits. For protein, most people can only effectively absorb and use about 30-40 grams in a single meal. A significantly larger amount at once means the extra protein might not be fully utilised for muscle building or satiety, and could potentially put a bit of extra load on the kidneys over time.
  • The Smart Tweak: The suggestion wasn’t about eating less protein overall, but about optimising its timing. By spreading her protein intake more evenly throughout the day – perhaps by including a protein source at breakfast – she could give her body a better chance to use it all effectively. This helps maintain steady energy and fullness without any waste.

Key Takeaway: Maximise Your Protein, Don’t Just Max It Out: Think about distributing your protein sources across your meals and even snacks. This approach helps your body make the most of this crucial nutrient, supporting your energy levels and keeping you satisfied during the day and throughout your weight loss journey.

The Croissant Conundrum: Stephanie’s Lesson in Listening In

Stephanie, who embarked on her Mounjaro journey in January, was actively engaging with Health Coach Nina through weekly calls. She shared a very relatable “oops!” moment: “Last week I went to work and ate the whole almond croissant available there and felt awful (strong nausea).”

Here’s what’s interesting: Stephanie recalled Nina advising her in their very first session to “stop eating at the first sign of fullness.” She’d actually felt full after just two bites of the croissant but continued eating. Her reflection was that she’d forgotten her usual protein shake, and the croissant was the most convenient option.

  • The Growing Awareness: This wasn’t just a tale of an ill-fated pastry. Stephanie was demonstrating incredible self-awareness. She connected her actions (eating past fullness) to the unpleasant physical consequences and to the guidance she’d received. She also shared a proactive strategy she’d adopted: consistently using a smaller plate for her meals to help manage portions, a habit she intends to keep for good!
  • Embracing the Process: Nina’s role here was to validate Stephanie’s experience. Yes, it’s important to plan meals and snacks to avoid being caught off guard. Yes, tuning into fullness cues is a skill that takes practice. And absolutely, yes, slip-ups happen! They aren’t failures; they’re part of the learning curve.

Key Takeaway: Tune In, Don’t Beat Yourself Up: Your body often knows what it needs, especially when medication is helping to regulate hunger signals. Practice noticing those early signs of fullness. And if you occasionally eat past them? See it as a data point. What can you learn? What can you adjust for next time? Kindness and consistency trump perfection every time to make progress on your weight loss journey.

Is This Thing On? Malcolm’s Discovery of “Stealth Mode” Success

Sometimes, progress can be a bit of a ninja – working effectively in the background even if you don’t immediately see it in the way you expect! Malcolm initially felt his medication wasn’t having the desired effect, telling Nina, “I don’t feel any difference in appetite.” However, his results painted a different picture: an 11-pound weight loss in just five weeks (on a 5mg dose).

What was really happening? Malcolm had made significant positive changes: he was choosing healthier foods, had cut out grazing, was naturally eating smaller portions, and had swapped more carbs for salads.

  • The Deeper Dive: Nina helped Malcolm explore how the medication might be subtly supporting these very changes. Even without a dramatic, day-one obliteration of appetite, the medication could be quietly reducing food “noise,” making it easier to resist cravings, or helping him feel more satisfied with those healthier choices and smaller meal sizes.
  • A New Perspective: This reframing was an eye-opener. The medication wasn’t just a switch; it was an enabler, making it easier for Malcolm to build and sustain positive habits that were clearly leading to results.

Key Takeaway: Progress Isn’t Always Loud: Weight loss medications can work in wonderfully varied ways. Don’t get discouraged if your experience doesn’t exactly match someone else’s, or if the primary effect isn’t what you initially anticipated. Look for all the positive shifts – in your choices, your habits, your energy levels, and yes, on the scale too. They all count!
